A Vietnamese woman who worked outside the law and was later repatriated to Taiwan married a Taiwanese man

Do Thi Thuan, from Hanoi, Vietnam, was once an undocumented migrant worker fleeing the police and struggling to make ends meet in the fields. While working outside the law, she met Shih Yen-yu, a seemingly rugged but surprisingly gentle Taiwanese rural man, who changed her destiny. After Do Thi Thuan was deported, Shih Yen-yu crossed the sea to marry her and brought her back to Taiwan. They lived together on the farmland, planting happy cauliflower on Taiwanese tables.

A gold rush dream shattered, and the courage to cross borders: an adventure from legal to illegal.

Du Shi Shun comes from Hanoi, Vietnam. Both her parents were farmers, and she worked in peanut fields from a young age, leading a very difficult life. In her hometown, Taiwan is a name that is both unfamiliar and full of hope—many villagers went to work in Taiwan and returned home in glory with their savings. The word "Taiwan" has almost become a synonym for "turning their lives around" in the mouths of the villagers.

At the age of 26, Du Shishun crossed the sea to Taiwan and worked as a factory worker in a contact lens factory in Taichung. The gap between reality and her expectations quickly became apparent. The factory operated on a three-shift system, day and night, and Du Shishun was often assigned to the night shift. This long-term reversed day and night lifestyle took a toll on her health. More importantly, the factory strictly prohibited her from taking on part-time jobs outside the factory, and there were few opportunities for overtime work. She could only receive a fixed salary, which was far from the rumors circulating in her hometown that "you can make a lot of money in Taiwan."

Meanwhile, her cousin, living a different kind of "outside the law" life in Puyan, Changhua, encouraged her to find another way to get rich. Caught between health and financial pressures, Du packed her bags, escaped the routine but monotonous production line, and embarked on an adventurous migration towards a direction full of unknowns but seemingly closer to "money".

When a woman from out of town meets a Taiwanese man's abrupt tenderness

After arriving in Puyan, Changhua to stay with her cousin, Du lived a life of "living paycheck to paycheck." One day she would be harvesting vegetables in the field, the next she would be carrying bricks on a construction site. Although life was full of uncertainty, her savings did increase little by little. She said sincerely, "The money I earn is worth my efforts." However, she also admitted that having more money did not bring her peace of mind. Whenever she saw a policeman on the street, her heart would beat faster, and she would worry about being arrested and deported at any time.

But during this period of constant anxiety, fate had an unexpected arrangement for her. One day, Du Shi Shun was having a meal with her cousin at a snack shop when a friendly Vietnamese word, "Miss," suddenly rang out. The person who called out to her was none other than her current husband, Shi Yanyu.

Chewing betel nut, Shih Yen-yu exuded a bold and unrestrained air, radiating the grassroots charm of a Taiwanese rural man. Recalling their first meeting, a hint of shyness appeared in his eyes. Shih Yen-yu stated that he still couldn't explain where he got the courage to suddenly speak to a stranger, nor why he "fell in love at first sight." At that time, he had already ended a long-term marriage, was estranged from his son, and even with his grandson for company, he had lost all interest in life. Seeing Du Shi-shun, however, inexplicably rekindled his hope.

After starting a relationship with Shih Yen-yu, Do Thi Shun unexpectedly found a deep and tender connection during her uneasy life in hiding. "He might lose his temper with the whole world, but he has never said a harsh word to me." Although the age gap between the two was enough to draw attention from outsiders, walking beside him, Do Thi Shun felt an unprecedented sense of confidence and happiness.

In Shi Yanyu's eyes, this Vietnamese woman was not only hardworking but also had a kind heart; even his grandson was meticulously cared for by Du Shi Shun. What surprised him even more was that this slender "lady" possessed an exceptional talent for farming, learning quickly and demonstrating a maturity and understanding far beyond her years. For Shi Yanyu, this belated love rekindled the passion in his life.

However, the sword of Damocles hanging over her head finally fell. During a dinner party, two police officers suddenly barged in, demanding to see her identification, ending Du Shi Shun's years of living without a license. Recalling the moment she was taken to the police station, tears welled up in her eyes, saying that at that moment, only despair filled her mind: "I felt I had absolutely no chance left, that my connection with Taiwan was truly severed." The 12 days she spent waiting for repatriation at the Nantou detention center were the darkest time of her life. The only light was Shi Yanyu's hoarse but firm promise: "Don't worry, I will go to Vietnam to marry you."

This wasn't just a drunken boast. Less than a week after Du Shi Shun's deportation, Shi Yanyu truly crossed the strait with his promise and appeared under the Hanoi sun. She had initially thought that being on the "deportation blacklist" would make the marriage application process incredibly difficult, but to her surprise, it went much more smoothly than others. For Du Shi Shun, the nightmare of working for money was over. This time, she was no longer a desperate, fleeing illegal worker trying to "turn her life around," but a Taiwanese wife, cherished by her husband and returning with dignity.
